King William Island Band of Gjoa Haven perform during Ikaluktutiak music festival. Katuutit band of Rankin Inlet sing a song during Ikaluktutiak music festival. Luke Nujiajuk of Gjoa Haven, drum dances while Miriam Aglukark and Lucy Nimiqtaqtuq sing an ajaajaa song.

Northern Haze

In 1985 the Igloolik rock band Northern Haze released their first record. The have performed in festivals across the North and the 1986 Expo in Vancouver. We talk to the band members about their 30+ year musical career.

Jerry Cans

Jerry Cans are the most active musical band based in Iqaluit traveling all over the world. A fusion of folk, rock, reggae, throat singing, fiddle and accordion they perform original songs and popular cover songs in Inuktitut. Led by couple Nancy Mike and Andrew Morrison who are raising 2 daughters within this heavily musical family. We talk to Nancy about her unique band, how she began her career and her musical inspirations.

Uvagut

We featured the much loved Iqaluit band Uvagut. The group formed in 1976 and continues to perform. The band talks about how they got their name, writing their original songs and the importance of singing in Inuktitut.

Rebecca Anaviapik-Soucie

Elders discuss their traditional knowledge about disciplining children. They also discuss the difference between Inuit and non-Inuit cultures and life styles. Tracy Taqtaq recalls comical stories that from her life. Greenlandic band (Tunugasuk band) perform.

Leo Subgut

Paul Kummak discusses how he helped fundraise for a cancer charity. Unniaqtu Band of Arviat perform. Tom Sammurtok and other government employees receive their NWT government long-service awards. A Greenlandic band music video. Nutaraq/Kassassuk Ole Kristiansen.

Saimata Michael, Rebecca Anaviapik-Soucie

Upatsuraaq meeting in Iqaluit. Chairperson Joe Kunuk explains the purpose of the committee and celebrates the opening of the committee by playing Inuit games. Simatak Michael

Tony Tugat from Taloyoak explains techniques seal hunting in different seasons. His personal favorite is in the winter when seals have a preferred air hole. Mary Anawak shares her story about ice fishing and the time when she pulled up the line and got a big surprise. Victoria Kayukuk, an elder from Qammaniqtuaq shares her story of camping in the springtime and her move from her camp back to the community to become a seamstress. She describes the use of the fabric and she has been creating wall hangings since the 1970’s. Kingait Band perform.
