Madeleine Allakariallak and Shauna Seeteenak

Shauna Seeteenak is a talented and well known female rapper and throat singer from Baker Lake now living in Iqaluit. Madeleine Allakariallak has been singing since she was a child, starting in the church choir. The two women get together to talk about their careers and different styles of singing.

Susan Arlukarq and Mary Poisey

Mary Poisey, from Pangnirtung started singing when she was very young. She performs at the Alianait concert in Iqaluit and talks about her singing career. We meet up with Susan Aglukark in Rankin Inlet. Susan talks about how she began singing as a child and how she decided to make a career out of music.

Jerry Cans

Jerry Cans are the most active musical band based in Iqaluit traveling all over the world. A fusion of folk, rock, reggae, throat singing, fiddle and accordion they perform original songs and popular cover songs in Inuktitut. Led by couple Nancy Mike and Andrew Morrison who are raising 2 daughters within this heavily musical family. We talk to Nancy about her unique band, how she began her career and her musical inspirations.

Inuit Circus

ARTCIRQ is an Inuit circus performance collective based in Igloolik, Nunavut. It was co-founded in 1998 by Guillaume Saladin, several circus artists from Montreal and youth from Igloolik. Its activities provide Inuit youth with a vehicle for creative expression that maintains strong links to Inuit traditions and performance styles such as acrobatics, juggling, clowning, throat singing, drum dancing and music.

Colleen Aasivak Nakashuk and Beatrice Deer

Beatrice Deer is an Inuk singer from Quaqtaq, Quebec. She joined Colleen Aasivak Nakashuk in Iqaluit to talk about her singing career. She provided singing advice to young artist Colleen Aasivak Nakashuk.

Uvagut

We featured the much loved Iqaluit band Uvagut. The group formed in 1976 and continues to perform. The band talks about how they got their name, writing their original songs and the importance of singing in Inuktitut.
